501(c)(3)

On May 20th, 2025, Localhost Research was officially recognized as a 501(c)(3) non-profit by the United States Internal Revenue Service. This marks a significant milestone for our organization that we are excited to share with our community.

What does 501(c)(3) Status Mean?

Being granted 501(c)(3) status does not change who we are and what our mission is. We remain committed to the cypherpunk philosophy and the free and open source movement, and we will carry that commitment into the Bitcoin ecosystem through continued research publications, code contributions, and community education.

The 501(c)(3) status helps us scale. It makes it easier for donors to contribute and gives us wider access to resources (through foundations and other grant programs). Over the next two years, we hope to grow our organization by adding a number of new contributors and researchers with the help of our generous donors.

In addition, 501(c)(3) status reinforces our commitment to transparency, as we are required to adhere to rigorous financial reporting standards.

Thank You to Our Supporters

We extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who has supported Localhost. Our founding donors, Mark Casey and Wences Casares, and our board members Matt Corallo and Denise Terry. And a very special thank you to our co-founder Murch and the rest of our founding team, Ava Chow, David Gumberg and w0xlt, who have moved from across the country and the world to be with us in the Bay Area.

We are honored to support the Bitcoin ecosystem and look forward to many years of continued efforts that benefit our community. Stay tuned for some upcoming announcements about infrastructure we plan to operate, educational initiatives we are spearheading, and other exciting contributions we have in store.
